Everything in our “self” is connected. There are five major parts of our health – spiritual health, mental health, emotional health, physical health, and sexual health. By focusing on each of these, we are taking what is called a holistic health approach.
Did you know that spirituality and/or spiritual health is connected to every other part of yourself? Spirituality is a very amorphous word, and there are a lot of things that can be implied by it. For the sake of this article, use whatever you consider to be your spiritual practices to fill in the blanks – it’s different for every one of us, and your understanding may differ because of that.
Spirituality and Mental/Emotional Health. I put mental and emotional health together because the two of them overlap quite often. Honestly, these two are the most obviously connected as well. If you don’t feel connected with yourself, or the world around you, or the spiritual being(s) that you look to, you’re going to feel insecure and you may struggle with aspects of your mental and emotional health as a result. It’s the same the other way too – if you’re struggling with something or your emotional health is out of whack, you may feel like your spiritual life is hurting as well.
Spirituality and Physical Health. Spirituality is about being connected to ourselves and those around us. That being said, if we are not connected to ourselves, we’re less likely to take care of ourselves physically. Also, you can get involved with spiritual practices that enhance your spiritual health, like taking a walk to meditate, or getting involved with yoga. These can help to improve your physical health in a number of ways.
Spirituality and Sexual Health. Many people don’t think about spirituality and sexual health, but they are deeply connected as well. For some people, sexual health (of all sorts, not just the act of having sex) is directly related to their spirituality in one way or another. By accepting yourself for who you are and by allowing yourself to be intimate with someone you love and trust; you are more likely to feel secure and you are better able to be intimate with the world around you in a spiritual manner.
So, as you can see, spirituality affects every part of our lives and helps us to get in touch with each aspect of our health. There are lots of things that you can do to improve your spiritual health that can help to improve other aspects of your health. What will you do to improve your overall health? Will you start looking at a more holistic health approach when you start to work toward better health practices?
